COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Boise State's Hugo Townsend and Dan Potter were named the 2021 Mountain West Men's Golfer of the Year and Men's Golf Coach of the Year, respectively, the conference announced, Thursday.
Townsend joins Graham DeLaet (2006 WAC) and Troy Merritt (2008 WAC) as the only Broncos to earn a conference golfer of the year honor. Bob Campbell (1995 Big Sky) is the only Boise State mentor to garner a coach of the year award. It is the first time since 2017 a school has swept the conference's top honors.
In addition, Skyler Eubank was named All-Mountain West, marking the first time Boise State has had two selections to an all-conference team since 2008 when Merritt (first team) and Matt Hastings (second team) were All-WAC performers. Townsend and Eubank combined to give the Broncos their first season with multiple first-team all-conference honorees since 1995 when Ryan Deiro, T.J. Gomez, Lance Rieber and Jarrod Warner were named All-Big Sky.
A native of Boden, Sweden, Townsend is ranked 16th nationally and has chalked up six-straight top-10 finishes, including a victory at the Duck Invitational this season.
"It's a great honor," Townsend said. "With the shortened season we've had, we came out quick and played well in every tournament. I'm happy to have individual success, but also team success. It's been a great season."
Potter led the Broncos to their highest ranking in school history (No. 46 by Golfstat) earlier this season, a victory at the UCSB Collegiate and the NCAA Southwest Regional, May 17-19 in Albuquerque, N.M., their first postseason appearance since 1994.
"It's humbling to receive this award, but the reality is I get a ton of support from people around me," Potter said. "First off, my wife Julia and I have three young daughters. She keeps our house functioning while I am on the road and she is amazing. Second, I'd like to thank my parents. I became addicted to competitive golf at a young age and they have supported me in every way possible to help me pursue what I love to do. I have also been lucky to coach some amazing players, past and present, and this is a tip of the cap to them and what they have been able to accomplish."
Eubank has been steady all season, earning a pair of top-10 and five top-25 finishes in seven events. His 71.90 stroke average is second on the team to Townsend's 69.81.
"Thank you coach Potter and coach (Kavan) Eubank for helping me on and off the golf course," Eubank said. "Although I believe my best golf is still ahead of me, they helped keep my game in check all season. I also thank my teammates for pushing me and making this year incredibly memorable. I'm extremely proud of how far this team has come in my time at Boise State and I'm honored to be All-Mountain West."
