Two Freshmen Lead The Way in Bronco Win

BOISE, Idaho – On a roster that returned 22 letterwinners this season, not many would have picked two freshmen to score for Boise State in its 2-1 win over College of Idaho in an exhibition match Wednesday evening at Boas Soccer Complex.

The Broncos opened the match with an aggressive attack that got off five shots in the first 15 minutes of play. Then in the 17th minute, Michaela Justiniani stepped up to a feed from Morgan Miles well outside the penalty box and delivered a strike past the keeper to open the scoring and give her team the early 1-0 advantage.

The Boise State defense was sensational in the first half, shutting down the Yotes and allowing only five shots to get off. Sophomore keeper Genevieve Crenshaw made three saves to keep College of Idaho off of the scoreboard and the half came to an end with Boise State holding onto its one-goal lead.

The second half was a different story for the Yotes' offense. They took advantage of early Bronco errors to find their way into good scoring opportunities. Payton Emongelli finally broke through the Bronco defense as she scored to level the match in the 56th minute.

Boise State responded with a few good chances, but the score remained tied with 15 minutes of play remaining. In the 76th minute Ana Campanella delivered a ball to set up Kenzie MacMillan who smashed it into the back of the net to reclaim the lead for the Blue and Orange. The freshman's goal would prove to be the match winner.

The Broncos now shift their focus to the first match of the regular season against Pac-12 Utah. Boise State will travel to Salt Lake City for an early road test against the Utes Sunday, Aug. 22 at 3 p.m. MT.
