Broken Cleat Lifts Broncos To Win Over Utah

8/22/2021 6:56:00 PM | Women's Soccer

SALT LAKE CITY – Boise State soccer started its 2021 regular season off with a bang as Kenzie MacMillan scored with the laces of her broken cleat to take down Pac-12 Utah 1-0 Sunday afternoon on the road.

"We came of age a little bit there," said head coach Jim Thomas. "Opponents make contests and you need to play the right opponents to bring out the right sides of you. I certainly think Utah is a tremendous team with a great team spirit playing for one another, and we had to match that. Then we had the opportunity to see if we could go one more than them, and that was the difference in the game."

The first half was a grit-and-grind affair with both defenses limiting the amount of chances given up inside their attacking halves. The midfield could be described as a battle ground as each team displayed physicality on every touch. In the 20th minute goalkeeper Sydney Smith made an incredible diving save to keep the Utes off of the scoreboard and keep the score level at zero where it remained until the second half.

"For Utah, if we let them play they're phenomenal and they're going to destroy us" said Thomas. "We had to disrupt them and make them uncomfortable, and that gave us the energy to then go and counter and feel like we had a foot in the game."

The Utes opened the second half with an aggressive attack that forced the Broncos to sink into defense for the first twenty minutes. After regaining control of the midfield, Boise State started to counter with runs of its own.

In the 74th minute the Broncos earned a throw-in deep inside Ute territory. After throwing it into the box, Sophie Drown ripped a shot that was blocked by the keeper, but MacMillan was there to recover and put it in, broken cleat and all.

"She's scored so many goals her boots are falling apart," said Thomas. "She's just magic and I think we're learning more and more about her. She's a maverick, a very different kind of player, but she hasn't lost herself within this whole process. She expresses who she is every time she plays and it's creative."

This was the freshman's second game-winning goal in as many matches as she scored the decisive blow in Boise State's exhibition match against College of Idaho.

Up next the Broncos will return to Boise for a three-match homestand beginning with a contest against Dixie State Thursday, Aug. 26.
