Goodwin's Heroics Lift Broncos In Double-OT Win

BOISE, Idaho – In a match that sat scoreless into the 103rd minute it was Boise State senior Dorian Goodwin who broke through and gave her team the win over Pacific Sunday afternoon at Boas Soccer Complex.
"It was really great challenge," said head coach Jim Thomas. "You need challenges to find out how good you are and what you've got in the locker room."
Regulation time was a hard-fought battle between both sides. Stellar defense was on display as physical play from both sides made it difficult to create good offensive chances. The Broncos managed to put up four shots on goal in the first 90 minutes while only giving up two to the Tigers.
"The second half we played brilliantly," said Thomas. Our energy was such that we won the ball higher, got into more transitionary moments and we'd figured out where the game needed to be played. Once we got to that point it all became about the last touch and all those corners and throw-ins that got so close. You start to question if it's going to be your day."
Early in the second overtime period, the Blue and Orange found that missing last touch as Goodwin collected a ball from Abby Bivens and started a run toward the box. With a defender in front she fired a curling ball that flew right past the hands of the diving keeper and into the back of the net, sending the crowd and her teammates into a frenzy.
"I'm so proud of Dorian," said Thomas. "The amount of ground that kid covers on the pitch is unbelievable. Goals have been sparse for her but not due to effort or quality, and she got a beautiful one today."
The Bronco defense is off to a historically good start this season. This is only the second time in the history of the program a team has shut out its opponents in each of its first three matches with the last such occurrence being in 2004.
Next up for the Broncos is another home match against UC Davis Thursday, Sept. 2 at 5 p.m. After that they hit the road for two weeks before returning to play CSU Bakersfield Sept. 17.
