Arca Costas, Soskic Rally for Tournament Title

BOISE, Idaho - Simon Arca Costas and Luka Soskic claimed the 2021 Dar Walters Classic in thrilling fashion Sunday, at Appleton Tennis Center. Arca Costas and Soskic rallied for a 2-1 victory over fellow Broncos Kyryll Kryvchun and Michael Bott in the mini-duel format.
Kryvchun and Bott jumped out to an early lead with a 7-5 win in doubles. Kryvchun continued the strong play early in singles, taking the first set against Arca Costas 6-0 and led in the second set 5-2, but just as they did all tournament long, Arca Costas and Soskic responded.
Arca Costas stormed back in the second set, winning five straight games to stay alive.
Soskic edged Bott in a tight first set, 7-5, before stretching out a 6-3 win in the second for a straight-sets victory. The win set the stage for a tournament-deciding third set on court one.
A back-and-forth affair saw Kryvchun take a 4-3 lead, but Arca Costas broke Kryvchun to tie the set. He then held serve to reach the brink of victory and broke Kryvchun once more for the title-clinching point.
The tournament was played in a mini-duel format. Each matchup featured two pairs who played a doubles match and two singles matches. The duo that won at least two out of the three matches was the victor.
Jan Lucca Marquardt and Caden Moortgat won their final consolation match to finish the weekend 2-2. The pair won their doubles match Sunday, and Marquardt added a straight-sets singles victory for the duel win.
Ryo Minakata teamed up with Air Force's Kyle Garner to form a mixed pair. The duo won their opening match, but finished the weekend 1-2 as a team.
Boise State will spend the next week training before taking off for the ITA Mountain Region Championships, Sept. 20-25 in Provo, Utah.
