SEATTLE, Wash. – Jan Lucca Marquardt led the Boise State men's tennis team winning his singles match Monday afternoon in Seattle, but it was not enough as the Washington Huskies handed the Broncos a 5-2 road defeat.
Boise State opened strong, sweeping the three doubles matches to claim the team point. Simon Arca Costas and Caden Moortgat started things off right for the Broncos as they rallied from 4-3 down to knock off Washington's top pair of Jack Davis and Han-Chih Lin 6-4.
Shortly after Arca Costas and Moortgat's win on court one, Michael Bott and Ryo Minakata clinched the team point at No. 3 doubles with a 6-4 victory over Nedim Suko and Jack Pulliam.
The final doubles contest was abandoned once the team point was settled, but at the time James Van Herzeele and Jesse Haas were leading 5-4 (40-15) over Ewen Lumsden and Rikuto Yamaguchi on court two.
Down one heading into singles, Washington rallied to take a 3-1 lead with victories on courts three, one and four, respectively.
The deciding point came on court two where Liborio, a freshman, opened the match by losing a heartbreaking tiebreaker 9-7 in set one. He then fell 6-2 in the second set to Davis who's win clinched the team victory for Washington up 4-1 at the time.
The final two singles contests saw the Broncos rally after dropping the first set to force their matches into third sets.
Van Herzeele battled back after falling 8-6 in a set one tiebreaker to claim the second frame 6-4. Unfortunately, Washington's Yamaguchi regrouped in the third to win a 10-point pro set tiebreaker to take the match 7-6(6), 4-6, 1-0(10-7).
The last match saw Boise State's Marquardt break through with the Broncos lone singles victory of the afternoon on court six. The transfer from Texas-Tyler rallied back from a 4-6 set one defeat to Pulliam to claim the win with back-to-back 7-5 victories in the second and third sets.
The loss wraps up a tough opening weekend for Boise State who finished 1-2 overall. Next up for the Blue and Orange is a trip to Waco, Texas, to face Abilene Christian on Jan. 23 and second-ranked Baylor on Jan. 24.
