BOISE, Idaho – After missing the opening two meets of its 2022 season, the Boise State gymnastics team started the year off with a bang, upsetting No. 19 Southern Utah behind big performances from both newcomers and veterans.
The Broncos entered the final rotation with a slight advantage on the scoreboard, 146.050-145.950, but three freshmen stepped up big to secure the victory. Emma Loyim, Elaina McGovern and Blake Pascal each posted 9.800s in their collegiate debuts, putting Boise State over the top 194.850-194.700 to claim the season-opening win. The 9.800s were team-highs and the second-highest scores of the meet.
With the victory Boise State (1-0, 1-0 Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference) has now opened its season with a top-20 upset each of the last two years. Last year the Broncos took down No. 13 Oregon State on the road 194.300-191.950. Boise State has come out on top in six of its last seven season-opening meets.
"This was a great season opener," said head coach Tina Bird. "I'm so proud of the team for battling through it tonight. We stuck together and made some big things happen. I'm extremely proud of the freshmen who had a great night and showed they will have great careers here at Boise State."
The bottom half of the Broncos' bars line-up put together outstanding performances, the best of which belonging to Emily Muhlenhaupt. The fifth-year senior put up a 9.950 to lead the team and claim the 17th bars crown of her career. It was her 11th time scoring 9.950 or better. Sophomore Emily Lopez proved her breakout-freshman campaign was no accident as she tied her career high of 9.925 to finish second in the meet. After missing last season, 2019 Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference bars champion Alexis Stokes impressed in her routine as she scored 9.875 to tie for third in the event.
"Having Alexis back in the bars lineup was amazing," said Bird. "Adding her to our dynamic-duo of Emily Lopez and Emily Muhlenhaupt makes us stronger."
Reigning MRGC Beam Champion Adriana Popp showed she still deserves to be on top as she claimed her first event title of the season with a 9.875. The Broncos finished the beam rotation with a 48.700.
The Broncos came out of the gates early, posting a team score of 48.900 on the vault in the first rotation. Lopez and Hope Masiado led the way for the Blue and Orange, each scoring 9.800s.
Up next Boise State will be on the road for its first road test of the year, travelling to BYU on Feb. 5.
