Bott and Sippel to Play for Dar Walters Championship

BOISE, Idaho – Boise State men's tennis went 2-1 on Saturday at the Dar Walters Classic, advancing one team into Sunday's championship.

Saturday's semifinal round featured Gem State rivals Boise State versus Idaho as the two teams split the matches to set up a Bronco-Vandal final on Sunday. The Broncos' Michael Bott and Sam Sippel will face Idaho's Francisco Bascon and Taiyo Kurata for the championship Sunday at 11 a.m. (Mountain).

Bott and Sippel defeated Idaho's Bruno Casino and Matteo Masala 2-1 in the first semifinal. The Bronco duo beat the Vandals 6-3 in the doubles match, followed by Sippel putting away Masala in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 while Bott fell to Casino in two 6-3, 6-2.

Meanwhile, James Van Herzeele and Ryo Minakata split on Saturday winning their quarterfinal contest 2-1 over Idaho's Francisco Gay and Alex Asenov. The Bronco tandem won the doubles match 6-1, while Van Herzeele won his singles contest in a quick two sets over Asenov 6-2, 6-0; meanwhile, Minakata came up short 6-4, 6-4 in his singles match.

In their semifinal match, Van Herzeele and Minakata fell 2-1 to the Vandals' Francisco Bascon and Taiyo Kurata. The Boise State team was edged in doubles on a tiebreaker falling 7-6(3), followed by Van Herzeele outlasting Kurata in three 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 while Minakata fell in two sets.

Van Herzeele and Minakata will play for third place on Sunday against Idaho's Casino and Masala.
Sippel is undefeated on the weekend going a combined 4-0, 2-0 in singles, as well as 2-0 in doubles.

Boise State will take next week off before heading to Albuquerque, N.M., for the ITA Mountain Region Championships, Oct. 13-17.
