Arca Costas Reaches ITA Mountain Region Semifinal

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Boise State men's tennis had a strong showing at the 2022 ITA Mountain Region Championships over the weekend going a combined 16-6 overall (11-4 in singles, 5-2 in doubles).

Fifth-year Simon Arca Costas – the number seven seed – led the Broncos in the singles competition advancing to the semifinal round with four-consecutive straight-set victories before falling in a tightly contested match 6-4, 7-5 to Utah's Geronimo Busleiman, the No. 2 seed in the tournament. Arca Costas advanced the furthest at the regional since Kyryll Kryvchun made the quarterfinal round in 2019.

Boise State opened singles play with all four Broncos winning their opening contests with James Van Herzeele joining Arca Costas in the round of 16 before falling to fifth-seeded Bodin Zarkovic 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles play, the team of Ryo Minakata and Simon Arca Costas reached the round of 16.

Meanwhile, the tandem of James Van Herzeele and Sam Sippel lost their opening match then regrouped to win the consolation championship with three straight victories. They defeated Air Force's duo of Arjun Kersten and Jonny Mascagni in a tiebreaker 8-7(9) in the final.

Bronco Leaders

Arca Costas went 4-1 in singles and reached the semifinals. Included in the run was a victory over second-seeded Nicolas Herrera Cuesta of Denver in the quarterfinal round.
Van Herzeele went 3-1 in singles overall with a win over 12th-seeded Jack Barnett of BYU to open the tournament.
Minakata and Sippel each went 2-1 in singles at the regional in singles, both fell to seeded opponents in the round of 32.

Notables

Arca Costas is now 8-1 this fall in singles matches moving his career total to 79, tied for 14th most in program history.

What's Next

The Broncos are scheduled to compete at the Utah Fall Classic this coming weekend at Salt Lake City.
