Broncos hold CSUN to 46 points

BOISE, Idaho – Marcus Shaver, Jr., dropped 19 points as Boise State men's basketball took a 55-46 victory over CSUN, Tuesday night at ExtraMile Arena.

After falling into a 19-13 hole the Broncos (5-2) responded with 13-unanswered points, capped by back-to-back triples from Max Rice to reclaim the lead. Marcus Shaver, Jr., knocked down two free throws right before the halftime buzzer to give his team a 28-27 advantage over the Matadors (1-5) entering the break.

After Boise State scored nine of the first 12 points in the second half, the two teams traded baskets for much of the period. The Broncos put the clamps on CSUN down the stretch, holding them without a field goal for over six minutes surrounding the final media timeout to help secure the victory.

Top Broncos
  • Marcus Shaver, Jr., led the team in scoring with 19 points to go along with five rebounds, four assists and a career-high-tying four steals.
  • Shaver was 6-for-6 at the free throw line in clutch situations (final five minutes, less than 10-point game).
  • Tyson Degenhart scored 11 points while adding four rebounds and a block.
  • Naje Smith had a career high nine rebounds, adding six points and two blocks.
  • Jace Whiting played a career-high 14 minutes and scored six of the Broncos' eight bench points.
Quotable
  • "You have to be able to win those games when maybe you don't shoot the ball well or the ball doesn't bounce your way because that's what happens," said head coach Leon Rice. "If you can accomplish the mission on those nights then that's great. In a month or two we're not going to remember if we won by nine or by 20."
  • "I thought our guys did a great job of adjusting in the second half," said Rice. "We became a little more determined in what we wanted to do and more physical."
  • "A win is a win," said Tyson Degenhart. "It doesn't matter how pretty it was, it's still a win in the win column."
Notables
  • Boise State extends its winning streak to four games. In that span the Broncos have held their opponents to an average of 54.5 points per game.
  • The Broncos held CSUN to 15 field goal makes, the fewest by an opponent since San Jose State made only 15 field goals on Dec. 31, 2020.
  • Tyson Degenhart has scored in double figures all seven games of the season.
  • Four Broncos finished with at least five rebounds: Naje Smith (9), Max Rice (7), Chibuzo Agbo (6) and Marcus Shaver, Jr. (5).
  • Boise State forced 12 turnovers on the night. The Broncos have forced double-digit in each of their seven games thus far.
