Taylor Caudill Dominates and Bats Come Alive Late in Season-Opening Victory

2/10/2022 6:07:00 PM | Softball

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Taylor Caudill set a career-high with 13 strikeouts and fired a four-hitter in Boise State's 7-0 win over UC Riverside to open the 2022 softball season.

Caudill's punchout total is tied for third in Boise State single-game history and one shy of the school record. She joined Aubray Zell (2012 vs. Loyola Marymount) as the only Broncos to pitch a shutout on Opening Day. Boise State blanked an opponent in a season opener for the third time in the last four years (2019 and 2020 were combined whitewashes).

The sophomore from Mission Viejo, Calif., fanned at least one in every inning, including striking out the side in the first and third. She lost a no-hit bid with two outs in the sixth and gave up three-straight singles to start the seventh. Caudill preserved the shutout by recording her final strikeout and inducing a game-ending ground ball double play.

"Taylor has grown so much since the fall," assistant coach Allie Walljasper said. "I've challenged here to have better body composer. She did a great job making adjustments each time through the lineup and it was fun to see her compete in the zone."

Boise State's offense was held in check until two outs in the sixth when the Broncos' bench provided a spark. India Kelly singled and fellow pinch hitter Bobbiann Pratt launched a two-run home for the first runs of the game.

"It was a great team win," head coach Justin Shults said. "It was a dog fight early on and our bench really came through. That was the difference in the game offensively. Taylor was terrific in the circle and gave us a chance to win the game with our bats."

The Broncos put the game way with a five-run seventh. Autumn Bennett delivered a pinch-hit single with one out and took second on a single by Jalen Ervin. Both runners moved up on an error and Eliyah Flores knocked in a run with an infield single. Serena Hutchingson plated a run with a single to make the score 4-0.

A wild pitch and a passed ball each allowed a run to score and Bella Rocco capped the rally with an RBI-single.

Boise State opens the SDSU Season Kickoff, Friday. The Broncos will face Cal Poly at 10 a.m. MT and Middle Tennessee at 3 p.m. MT.
