SAN DIEGO – Boise State posted two wins at the SDSU Season Kickoff, Friday to improve to 3-0.
The Broncos defeated Cal Poly 8-7 in the first game of the day and downed Middle Tennessee 4-0 in the afternoon.
"It was a really good day," Boise State Head Coach Justin Shults said. "We came out flat in the first game, but did a good job with our short game early on and Sara (Johnson) did a good job keeping us in the game. We (the coaching staff) challenged our team between games and they responded really well. We played a much cleaner softball game in the afternoon."
In the opener, Boise State got on the board first with a three-run top of the third. With two outs, Alycia Flores and Bella Rocco delivered back-to-back RBI-singles and an error by the Mustangs (0-1) allowed a third run to score.
In the fifth, Flores drilled a two-run home run to extend the lead to 5-0. A run-scoring single by Jalen Ervin in the sixth pushed the advantage to 6-0.
After Cal Poly pushed a run across in the bottom of the sixth, Rocco drove in a run on a fielder's choice and India Kelly added a sacrifice fly for an 8-1 lead.
Sara Johnson (1-0) was lifted after yielding a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh in favor of Brook Thompson. Four of the five Mustangs Thompson reached base and Taylor Caudill was called on with one out, a runner at third and Boise State's lead down to 8-5.
Caudill retired the first batter she faced on a ground out as a run scored to cut the lead to 8-6. A pair of singles sandwiched around a wild pitch trimmed the lead to one. Caudill then snared a line drive to preserve the win and earn her first save of the season.
Against the Blue Raiders (0-3), Bobbiann Pratt and Serena Huchingson each homered and Jordyn Hutchins added two RBI to back the strong pitching of Hannah Bailey (1-0).
Bailey needed just 75 pitches for her fourth-career shutout and third as a Bronco. She allowed four hits, struck out five and faced two batters over the minimum.
Boise State plays Middle Tennessee at 10 a.m. Saturday followed by a 12:30 contest with Stanford.
