Broncos Set Record for Wins in February

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Boise State softball secured two more wins Sunday in the final day of the Gaucho Classic.
The Broncos (13-2) knocked off Providence (5-5) 6-0 in a game shortened to six innings due to the Friars' travel schedule. Boise State then downed the host Gauchos (3-12) 6-3 to set a program record for wins in February.
The 13-2 start equals the best in Boise State's history. The 2019 Broncos began the year 18-2 and eventually earned an at-large bid to the NCAA postseason.
"Our freshmen were big today," Boise State Head Coach Justin Shults said. "Mykenzie Hanna had a couple of big swings and Megan Lake did a great job on the bases with her softball IQ that led to an insurance run for us against UCSB."
Hannah Bailey (5-1) fired a one-hit shutout against Providence while striking out seven. Five Broncos collected an RBI, including Abby Bumcrot's two-run single in the fourth that gave Bailey all the support she needed.
Against the Gauchos, Hanna belted a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, to drive in five of the Broncos' six runs.
Bailey relieved Taylor Caudill in the circle and recorded the final 10 outs for her second win of the day.
The Broncos travel to Tucson, Ariz., for the Wildcat Invitational, March 4-6. Boise State opens the tournament, Friday against North Dakota at 1:30 p.m.
