BOISE, Idaho - Shauna Heffernan's singles win on court six clinched the team victory for Boise State as the Broncos cruised past the Idaho Vandals 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center. It was the third-straight victory for the Blue and Orange as it improved to 3-1 on the year.
Boise State interim head coach Maria Lopez was happy with the team's performance against the Vandals, "It was another pretty solid performance from all the players today. We started strong and won number two doubles quickly with a 6-0 win; then, we carried that momentum to the other doubles matches and into singles. Early in singles, we had great success, winning the opening set in all six contests. We just took care of business pretty quickly. Our girls are starting to understand how much their discipline carries through in their matches and those important moments. It was a great win."
Heffernan had an impressive day for the Broncos, starting with a dominating 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles with teammate Holly Stewart, then wrapped the day up with the team victory clinching win at No. 6 singles in straight sets over Jayanne Palma 6-1, 6-3.
Joana Baptista and Nicole Discenza clinched the team doubles point for the Blue and Orange with a 6-4 win on court one to give the home side the early advantage up 1-0.
Stewart's straight-set 6-1, 6-3 singles victory on court three began the roll for the Broncos. The win pushed Stewart's team-high lead for singles victories to 14.
Discenza increased the Boise State lead to 3-0 with her commanding performance on court five, where she won 6-0, 6-1 to claim her 13th win of the year and set up Heffernan for the clinching team point.
Boise State extended its lead to 6-0 following Baptista's two-set win 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Pauline Ernstberger's victory on court one 6-3, 6-2 over Idaho's top player Ines Oliviera. It was Baptista's 13th win of the season, while Ernstberger recorded her 12th. Â
Idaho claimed the final singles match of the day, which was tightly contested between the Vandals' Andrea Redondo and Boise State's Ana Conde Vendrell. A third-set 10-point tiebreaker decided the match, with Redondo taking it 4-6, 6-1, 1-0(9).
Boise State will close out its three-week and four-match homestand next Sunday when it hosts the Gonzaga Bulldogs.
