Broncos Take Series Opener at Nevada

3/25/2022 7:40:00 PM | Softball

Boise State wins eighth-straight game to improve to 25-5 overall and 4-0 in MW play.

RENO, Nev. - Taylor Caudill pitched her fifth complete game as Boise State took game one of the Mountain West Conference series 4-2 at Nevada Friday afternoon.

Caudill won her 10th game of the year, allowing two runs on three hits with nine strikeouts and one base on balls. In fact, Caudill and her teammates retired the Wolf Pack in order in five of the seven innings.

Boise State took advantage of some Nevada miscues to score, finishing the game with only one hit while scoring four runs. Nevada committed one error while the Wolf Pack pitcher hit four batters and walked four.

The Broncos struck early, recording three runs in the top of the first. Kelsey Hall opened the game by reaching base on a hit by pitch, followed by an Alison Seng walk. Kelsey Lalor brought Hall home on a single through the right side, while Seng scored on a throwing error on the same play. Lalor came home from third on a Serena Huchingson ground out RBI.

The fourth inning started as the first did, with a Bronco being hit by a pitch and another earning a walk to reach base; in this case, Huchingson was hit by the pitch, and Mykenzie Hanna walked. Bella Rocco's groundout brought home Huchingson from third for the final Boise State run and the Broncos up 4-0.

Caudill kept the Wolf Pack off the bases until the fourth inning, when they recorded a pair of hits. Nevada had the bases loaded with no outs and looking to make some noise. Boise State's sophomore pitcher, backed up by her teammates, regrouped and got out of the inning by striking out the final two batters, while giving up only one run.

The Broncos then retired Nevada's batters in order in the fifth and sixth innings before surrendering a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to conclude the scoring.

The Blue and Orange has now won eight straight and improved to 25-5 overall and 4-0 in conference play. Boise State and Nevada will face off two more times this weekend in Reno, with first pitch coming at 1 p.m. (Mountain) on Saturday and Sunday.
