Boise State is the only undefeated team after day one at the Boise State Beach Classic.
BOISE, Idaho - Boise State beach volleyball opened its homestand with a pair of hard-fought wins Friday afternoon at the Boise State Beach Classic, defeating Washington and Oregon by 3-2 scores. It was an exciting day of beach volleyball in Boise with four matches played at the Classic; 3-2 scores decided all four. On Friday, the Broncos were the only undefeated team, going 2-0, both Washington and Colorado Mesa went 1-1, while Oregon finished at 0-2.Â
"Our team did a great job, especially with two Pac-12 teams coming into Boise," said Boise State Head Coach Allison Voigt. "I thought our team rose to the occasion playing great volleyball to get two 3-2 wins. The team came in with good energy and wanted to protect our home courts.Â
I thought Dani (Boss) and Madison (Nichols) played well today; they really clicked together. I also thought Yasmin (Tan) and Erin (Martin) looked phenomenal during the Oregon match. It was fun to watch them play. But I think, all in all, our whole team had some really good moments. We need to make sure we have that momentum going into tomorrow."
Boise State was led by the team of Danielle Boss and Madison Nichols, and the tandem of Joey Benson and Emilia Guerra-Acuna as both pairs went 2-0 Friday afternoon. Boss and Nichols improved to 12-9 on the year, while Benson and Guerra-Acuna moved to 12-7.
The Broncos No. 1 pair of Erin Martin and Yasmin Tan went 1-1, with Katie Martin and Kaylee Mejia going 1-0 on the day.
Boise State opened the Classic by playing the first match of the day against the Washington Huskies, who were fresh off an upset of then-No. 11 Cal last weekend. Today Boise State rallied from one point down to take a 2-1 lead versus the Huskies when Katie Martin and Mejia won at No. 4 pair 27-25, 21-19, followed by Benson and Guerra-Acuna's 22-20, 21-19 victory on court five.
After Washington pulled even with a 21-18, 21-15 win at the No. 1 pair, Boise State's duo of Boss and Nichols clinched the match for the Blue and Orange on court three, where they defeated Maeve Griffin and Audra Wilmes in three sets 21-16, 23-25, 15-13. Â Â
In the last contest of the day, the Broncos found themselves in another tough match against the Oregon Ducks in their second encounter of the year.Â
The Broncos rallied from a point down for the second time on Friday to take the match with three consecutive victories. Boss and Nichols recorded the first win for the Blue and Orange with a straight-set 21-18, 21-18 victory on court four to tie the score at 1-1.Â
Erin Martin and Tan put Boise State ahead 2-1 when they dispatched Oregon's top tandem of Brooke Nuneviller and Reagan Hope 21-15, 21-14 on court one.
Benson and Guerra-Acuna brought home the victory with the clinching win at the No. 5 pair. The Bronco duo rallied from a set down to beat the Duck's Ally Haden and Savannah Siegrist in three sets, 20-22, 21-13, 15-13. The final pair went to Oregon in three sets to make the final score 3-2 for Boise State.Â
The Broncos snapped a seven-match losing streak to Washington with the victory as they claimed their second victory over the Huskies in the all-time series (2-7). Meanwhile, Boise State remained perfect versus Oregon with its second win over the Ducks this season to increase the Broncos' lead in the series to 8-0.Â
The Boise State Beach Classic continues Saturday with three more contests starting at 10 a.m. (MT) when the Broncos take on the Colorado Mesa Mavericks, followed by Oregon versus Washington at noon. Boise State will conclude the Classic with its Senior Day match versus Washington in the second meeting of the weekend between the Broncos and Huskies. Â Â
