Townsend Finishes Top-15 at Thunderbird Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz – Hugo Townsend shot a 5-under, 208 to lead the Boise State men's golf team's 10th-place finish at the Thunderbird Invitational at Papago Golf Club, Saturday afternoon.
"It was good for us to play in a different environment this week," said head coach Dan Potter. "This event had a big championships feel to it and we were on a firm and fast course for the first time in a while. We were far from our best but we battled like we always do to keep it respectable as a team."
The tournament field featured 15 programs, 10 of which ranked in GolfStat's top 50 with five being ranked inside the top 10. The Broncos (285-285-287—857) ended the tournament 5-over par, finishing above several teams ranked inside the top 50 including No. 35 South Florida, No. 42 Utah and No. 49 Oregon State.
Townsend's first round of the tournament represented the 100th of his career at Boise State. In that opening round he shot a scorching 6-under 65 to enter the second round tied atop the leaderboard. The Swede shot 72 and 71 in his next two rounds, notching a T13 finish in the end.
Finishing behind Townsend was Max Charles (72-71-72—215) who shot 2-over and tied for 40th, while Alex Talbot (76-69-72—217) finished round three at 4-over to tie for 53rd. Rounding out the Bronco lineup was Skyler Eubank (73-73-73—218) and Nick Hedman (75-74-77—226) who placed T46 and T82, respectively.
"Hugo had a great first round and Alex had a big second round for us," said Potter. "Everyone birdied their last hole today and that's something we always take pride in."
Boise State turns its attention to Provo, Utah, where the Broncos will compete in the PING Cougar Classic at the Riverside Country Club, April 22-23.
