Utah State Holds Off Broncos 4-3

LOGAN, Utah - Boise State men's tennis attempted to rally from 3-0 down Saturday afternoon but came up just short at Utah State, falling 4-3 to the Aggies in a Mountain West Conference match.
Down three, Boise State began its rally with three extremely close singles contests on courts three, four and five. All three Broncos rallied from a set down to win their matches to tie the team score at 3-3.
Jan Lucca Marquardt battled back to win at No. 3 singles. The victory included a marathon set-two tiebreaker that he won 15-13, forcing the match into a third set. Marquardt completed the rally when he defeated USU's Sergi Mico Fenollar 2-6, 7-6(13), 6-4, claiming his 13th win of the season.
Caden Moortgat pulled the Blue and Orange within one of the Aggies when he came back to beat Felipe Acosta on court four in three sets. After a 6-1 loss in set one, Moortgat regrouped to take set two 7-5, then held off Acosta in a third-set tiebreaker 7-6(5). It was the 11th win of the season for the sophomore from Texas.
Boise State tied the team score three apiece when Ryo Minakata won at No. 5 singles. Minakata lost 6-4 in set one, then stormed back to dominate the second and third sets to put away the Aggies' Roko Savin 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 as he moved to 13-9 on the year.
That left the No. 6 singles contest as the decisive match. Boise State's James Van Herzeele battled Javier Ruiz through three sets before falling 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-4 as Utah State held on for the win.
The Aggies opened the match by winning the team doubles point 2-0 with wins on courts one and two.
The Broncos will close the regular season next week when they host the San Diego State Aztecs at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the Appleton Tennis Center.
