Boise State won its third-straight Mountain West match with a 4-1 victory over New Mexico.
LOGAN, Utah - Shauna Heffernan's three-set singles victory on court six clinched the match for Boise State as the Broncos defeated New Mexico 4-1 in Logan, Utah, Saturday afternoon. The win was the third-straight in league play for Boise State, who improved to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in Mountain West Conference play.Â
The score was 3-1 Broncos when Heffernan brought home the victory when she defeated New Mexico's Satoho Toriumi in three sets. The Boise State sophomore took the first set 6-2, then after Toriumi won the second frame, Heffernan put it away with a commanding set three win 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
The match began with the Blue and Orange taking the team doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Holly Stewart and Heffernan won 6-3 at No. 2 doubles, their ninth win overall. Pauline Ernstberger and Ana Conde Vendrell followed with a 6-4 victory at No. 3 doubles to clinch the point.Â
Nicole Discenza recorded the first singles victory of the day with a quick 6-3, 6-1 win on court five over UNM's Hsiang-Wen Huang. The win is the 14th of the season for the sophomore.Â
The Lobos closed within 2-1 only to see the Broncos pull away down the stretch. The Broncos' Stewart brought the team within one of victory when she rallied from a set down to defeat New Mexico's Hsuan Huang. The Boise State senior took the second set 7-5, then dominated the third to claim the win 2-6, 7-5, 6-1. Stewart increased her team-leading wins total to 18.
Heffernan then closed it out with the clinching victory on court six.Â
Boise State will be back in action Sunday morning in Logan when they face the Air Force Falcons. Â
