Broncos Shut out Aggies for School-Record Fifth Sweep

5/1/2022 2:59:00 PM | Softball

Boise State’s defense propels Broncos to a 6-0 victory at Utah State.

LOGAN, Utah - Boise State won a school-record fifth three-game series sweep — fourth in league play — on Sunday with a 6-0 win at Utah State. The Broncos' offense was powered by three home runs, while the defense was the story of the game, holding the Aggies hitless until the sixth inning as Boise State improved to 34-10 overall and 13-5 in Mountain West play.

Boise State's defense was huge in the win as they forced the Aggies to go three and out in five of seven innings.

Hannah Bailey had surrendered only one walk in the fourth inning before Utah State came alive in the sixth. Bailey pitched her 11th complete game of the year, facing 25 Aggies and allowing no runs on two hits with eight strikeouts and one walk, collecting her 15th (15-3) win of the season.

The Bronco infield played a significant role as they recorded 13 groundouts to go with Bailey's eight strikeouts. No hit made it out of the infield during the game. Bailey led the way with four putout assists to Alison Seng at first, followed by Jalen Ervin (2B) with three, Alycia Flores (SS) and Autumn Bennett (3B) recorded two assists each. At the same time, Seng tallied all 13 putouts, two unassisted.

Offensively, Boise State had six batters record at least one hit with five scoring runs. Eliyah Flores led the team with two hits, while Seng, Kelsey Hall and Alycia Flores hit home runs.

The Broncos did their damage offensively in two innings scoring three in the second and three in the seventh.

Seng started it off when she sent a 2 RBI smash over the right-field wall in the second inning that also brought Alycia Flores home from first. Ervin then doubled to left field with two out and no one on base. She came home on Abby Bumcrot's single up the middle to make it 3-0 Broncos.

After being held in check during the first five innings, the Aggies came alive and threatened to score in the sixth. Utah State had two singles, and one batter advanced on an error to load the bases with no outs when the Blue and Orange regrouped. Bailey struck out the next two batters, the third grounded out to her as Boise State survived the sixth without surrendering a run.

The Broncos put it away in the top of the seventh when they added three insurance runs for a 6-0 advantage. It began with Eliyah Flores hitting a single to the left side, followed by Hall's 11th homer of the season. She sent the 2 RBI slam over the right-center fence to put Boise State up five.

Alycia Flores then hammered her sixth long ball of the year past the center field fence. It marked the second day in a row where Hall and Flores hit back-to-back homers in an inning.

Boise State closed out the contest by recording three-straight groundouts in the bottom of the seventh to secure its sixth-consecutive victory.

Next weekend, the Blue and Orange will close out the home schedule when the Broncos host the New Mexico Lobos in a three-game series at Huber Field at Dona Larsen Park.
