COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For the second-straight season, Boise State men's golfer Hugo Townsend was named the Mountain West Men's Golfer of the Year, the conference announced Thursday.
Townsend becomes the first Bronco in program history to win conference golfer of the year honors twice in a career. Two other Broncos have earned the award, with Graham DeLaet doing so in 2006 and Troy Merritt in 2008, both as members of the Western Athletic Conference.
"I'm very honored to be named the MW Men's Golfer of the Year," said Townsend. "I would like to thank the coaches who voted for me and believed that I deserved this award. It's always fun to win individual awards, but I am excited to go out and compete with the team for a chance to make it to nationals."
Townsend is ranked as the 39th player in GolfStat's national rankings, the highest of any individual in the MW. The senior boasts a scoring average of 69.84 during the 2021-22 campaign, which currently stands as the second-lowest mark in a single season in program history.
"I'm thrilled for Hugo to win this award for the second time," said head coach Dan Potter. "He was very consistent all year which is a testament to the work he puts in to all aspects of his game. He's highly self-aware of what he needs to focus on to stay sharp and be ready to compete every time he tees it up."
Townsend leads Boise State this season in top-10 finishes (six) and top-five finishes (four), including a runner-up performance at the MW Championships (April 29-May1). Earlier this season, Townsend became the second Bronco in program history to finish in the top 25 30 times in a career, and has done so in each of his last 19 tournaments. The Broncos have counted 30 of the Swede's 31 rounds played this season, the most of any individual in the lineup.
Boise State is wrapping up preparations for its second-straight trip to the NCAA Regionals. The ninth-seeded Broncos will be joined by 12 other programs at the Traditions Club, May 16-18, with the top five teams advancing to the national finals.
