Broncos Post a Pair of Top-25 Finishes at Regionals

BRYAN, Texas – Boise State men's golfers Hugo Townsend and Max Charles each earned a top-25 finish as the NCAA Bryan Regional came to a close, Wednesday afternoon.

The Broncos (296-301-305—902) were competing in back-to-back regionals for the first time in program history, having taken part in last year's regional in Albuquerque. The team shot 38-over par at the Traditions Club, good for 11th place in the tournament.

"It was obviously a struggle from start to finish this week as a team," said head coach Dan Potter. "We knew the course conditions would be a huge challenge and we just weren't up to it this week. There is no shame in finishing our season at the NCAA regionals, but it was a disappointment to perform below our ability."

Townsend (69-74-72—215), who finished T15 in last season's regional, led the way for Boise State in the tournament, shooting 1-under to finish tied for 12th. The Bronco carded a 3-under 69 in the opening round after firing five birdies on the back nine. Townsend finished the week with 12 birdies, which led the team and tied for eighth-most in the tournament.

Charles (74-71-74) picked up a T24 finish at 3-over par, his seventh in the top 25 this season. After shooting a quadruple-bogey on the third hole of the first round, Charles responded well by shooting 1-under in the remainder of the tournament. In the opening round, the Aussie nailed a chip-in from just off of the 15th-hole green to notch an eagle, one of just eight eagles by any player in the tournament.

Fifth-year senior Skyler Eubank (75-74-78—227) shot 11-over par to finish T50 in his final tournament for Boise State, while Nick Hedman (78-82-81—241) followed behind with a 66th-place performance. Alex Talbot (169 across two rounds) and Drew Reinke (83 in the final round) split time in the fifth slot to round out the lineup for Boise State.

The 2021-22 season will be remembered as one of the most successful in program history. The Broncos won multiple tournaments in a single season for the first time in nearly three decades, and reached the NCAA regional round in back-to-back seasons for the first time. Boise State even entered the national record book, having shot the third-lowest round in NCAA history (26-under, 262) at the Mark Simpson Invitational in the fall.

For Eubank and Townsend, they wrapped up a pair of the most successful individual careers in Boise State men's golf history. Townsend finished his career with 32 career top-25 victories, the second most in Boise State history behind Graham DeLaet, and a career scoring average of 70.96, the second-lowest behind DeLaet, while setting the program record for par-or-better rounds in a career (70).

For Eubank, he played the second-most rounds of any golfer at Boise State (135) while shooting an average of 72.27 strokes per round, good for fourth all-time in Bronco history. Eubank also ranks third all-time in top-25 finishes (26) and became the sixth Boise State men's golfer to record double-digit top-10 victories.
