Boise State Rally Comes Up Short in Four-Set Loss to Utah State

BOISE, Idaho – Boise State volleyball came up short Tuesday night in Bronco Gym, falling in four sets, 25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 25-20, to Utah State in a match-up between the Mountain West leaders. The Broncos moved to 9-8 overall and 5-2 in conference, while the Aggies improved to 13-5 and 6-1, respectively.
 
Set one was a battle, seeing 10 ties and five lead changes. Boise State led by as many as four points midway through the set but could not hold off USU. Tied at 20-20, the Aggies used a 5-2 run to claim the frame by three points, 25-23.
 
Utah State took control of the second set early and never trailed, taking it by five, 25-20. Boise State attempted to rally from seven down and came with three but could get no closer.
 
Boise State staged a huge rally in the third to stay alive in the match. Down seven at 19-12, the Broncos rallied for the win. The Blue and Orange outscored USU 13-2 down the stretch, including closing it out with an 8-0 run to defeat the Aggies 25-21. 
 
The Broncos rode the energy gained from the set three win early in the fourth frame and were up 14-10 when the Aggies began their rally. Utah State outscored the Blue and Orange 15-6 later in the frame to clinch the 3-1 match victory.
 

Top Broncos

  • Paige Bartsch led the Broncos for the 17th match this season with double-figure kills on a team-high 18 to go with team-highs in service aces with two, digs with 14, and points with 21.5; she also had three block assists.
  • Noelani Helm had a double-double on a team-best 36 assists and 12 digs.
  • Chey Day recorded her first career match with double-digit kills, finishing with a team-second-best 12 while hitting a team-best .435 percent.
  • Anabel Kotzakov had nine kills, three block assists and 10.5 points.
  • Annie Kaminski had seven kills and a team-high seven blocks for 11 points.

Notables

  • Two players recorded double-doubles on the night; Helm earned her team-best eighth, while Bartsch turned in her seventh of the year and 18th in her career.
  • Bridey O'Connor came in off the bench to record a season-high six kills.
  • Kaminski logged her seventh contest of the year with five or more blocks.
  • Bella McGirr recorded her eighth match in double-digit digs, finishing with 12 against the Aggies.
