
Boise State Women's Tennis to ITA Mountain Region Championships

The Boise State women's tennis team will travel to Salt Lake City, Utah, to compete in the ITA Mountain Region Championships, Oct. 18-22.

- UP NOW: Boise State will travel to Salt Lake City, Utah, to compete in the ITA Mountain Region Championships hosted by Utah, Oct. 18-22.
- WHO'S IN: Ten Broncos will take part in the event. Lorelyz Marruffo and Nicole Discenza will pair up, along with Pauline Ernstberger and Shauna Heffernan. Joana Baptista and Ana Conde Vendrell will compete together while Ryan Kershner will team up with Bhakti Shah. Ella Piron and Ariadna Briones Ginesta will round out the Bronco competition on the doubles side of the tournament. Ernstberger, Marruffo, Baptista and Heffernan will all compete in the top singles flight while Discenza, Conde Vendrell, Briones Ginesta, Shah and Piron will participate in the second flight.
- NATIONALS POSSIBILITIES: Both the winner and finalist of the top singles flight will qualify for the ITA Fall Championships in San Diego, Nov. 1-5.
- SCOUTING THE FIELD: Twenty other teams will join Boise State at the ITA Mountain Region Championships. These teams include Air Force, BYU, Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, Idaho, Idaho State, Montana State, Montana State, Nevada, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona, UTEP, UNLV, Utah, Utah State, Utah Tech, Weber State and Wyoming. All of the top ten from last season's final ITA Mountain Region Rankings will be at the tournament. Boise State finished ninth in the same rankings.
- LAST TIME OUT: Baptista earned a championship singles victory in the top flight at the Beach Tennis Fall Tournament in Long Beach, Calif., Oct. 6-8. She cruised through the Black Draw, starting off with a win over Long Beach State's Paulina Franco-Martinessi (3-6, 6-4, 6-2) before defeating Kayla Meraz from UC Irvine (3-6, 6-2, 7-5). In the finals, Baptista faced off against Rhona Cook of Long Beach State, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Shah also had a strong showing, claiming a third-place finish in the White Draw while Piron secured a fourth-place finish in the Grey Draw.
- PAST SUCCESS: Baptista and Discenza competed as a tandem at the same tournament last season and advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to a team from Colorado. Ernstberger also went 3-1 in singles, advancing to the round of 16 in the top flight. Heffernan and Kershner went 3-1 as well in singles while competing in the second flight.
- MILESTONES TO WATCH: Ernstberger and Heffernan currently sit at 24 career doubles victories as a pair, one short of moving to the No. 15 spot for most wins
