Broncos Lose to a Pair of Ranked Opponents

ORLANDO, Fla. - Boise State dropped a pair of games at the Black & Gold Classic, hosted by UCF, to open its 2023 softball season, Friday.

The Broncos (0-2) lost 12-4 in five innings to No. 10 Georgia (3-0) before being edged by No. 15 UCF (2-1) 9-8.

In the opener, the Broncos jumped out to a 4-0 lead against Georgia. In the top of the second, Eliyah Flores worked a one-out walk and freshman Sydney Groves crushed the first pitch she saw as a collegian for a two-run home run. Serena Huchingson and Flores added RBI-singles in the lead. The Bulldogs rallied for six runs in the third and fourth to record the run-rule victory. Taylor Caudill (0-1) started in the circle and took the loss for Boise State.

Against the Golden Knights, Boise State trailed 7-1 after four innings before storming back to take an 8-7 lead. Alycia Flores stroked a two-run single in the top of the fifth to cut the Broncos' deficit to 7-3 before Boise State exploded for five runs in the sixth. Eliyah Flores singled in the first run of the rally. Huchingson added a two-run single, Groves tied the game with a sacrifice fly and an error allowed Huchingson to score the go-ahead run.

In the bottom of the seventh, UCF's Chloe Evans hit a two-run home run off Amber Thornton (0-1) to give the Golden Knights the victory.
