TEMPE, Ariz. – Boise State men's tennis defeated 61st-ranked Drake 4-3 Saturday evening at the Diablos Tennis Tournament at Kiwanis Park in Tempe, Ariz. The Blue and Orange improved to 8-4 overall, while the Bulldogs moved to 8-7.
 
With the team scored tied at 3-3, Sam Sippel rallied from a set down to bring home the win for Boise State with a three-set 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Drake's 92nd-ranked Jeremy Schifris at No. 1 singles.  
 
Boise State took the early advantage in the match by winning a tightly contested team doubles point. Michael Bott and Simon Arca Costas recorded the first win when they won 6-3 on court one over 61st-ranked Matija Matic and Oliver Johansson.
 
The last two matches went to tiebreakers, with the Bronco tandem of Jan Lucca Marquardt and Sippel breaking a 1-1 tie (team score) with the point-clinching victory at No. 3 doubles 7-6(3).
 
Arca Costas extended the Boise State advantage to 2-0 with a quick straight-set victory 6-2, 6-1 on court two.
 
Up 2-1, the Broncos' John Chin won his No. 5 singles contest 6-4, 7-5 to move the blue and orange within one of the team victory.
 
Drake rallied with victories at No. 6 and 3 singles to set up Sippel's match-clinching performance.

 

Notables

  • Sippel played a big part in the win as a part of the team's doubles-clinching point, followed by the match-clinching singles victory.
  • Sippel has 33 combined (singles and doubles) victories on the year, 15 in singles and 18 in doubles.
  • Arca Costas recorded his 90th career singles victory to move into sole possession of 11th place in the Bronco record book.
  • Arca Costas's doubles and singles victories moved him to 158 combined career victories, good for sole possession of 11th in program history. He has 36 on the year, 19 in singles and 17 in doubles.

What's Next

The Broncos will take their 1-1 mark on the weekend into Sunday's final round of the Diablos Tennis Tournament, hosted by Arizona State, against No. 69 Liberty at 9 a.m. (PT).
