Boise State Gets Second Win Over Ranked Team, Beats Liberty 4-1

TEMPE, Ariz. – Boise State men's tennis defeated its second nationally ranked team of the weekend when the Broncos beat No. 69 Liberty 4-1 Sunday morning at the Diablos Tennis Tournament in Tempe, Ariz. The win improved the Blue and Orange to 8-4 overall and 2-1 on the weekend against three ranked opponents.
 
For the second day in a row, the match was clinched at No. 1 singles by Sam Sippel, who once again rallied from a set down; this time, he beat Josh Wilson in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
 
Boise State opened the contest by taking the doubles point 2-1 from the Flames. Trailing 1-0 in the doubles point, the Broncos rallied with victories in the final two matches.
 
Michael Bott and Simon Arca Costas downed the 74th-ranked duo nationally in Wilson and Christiaan Worst 6-4 at No. 1 doubles, followed by Jan Lucca Marquardt and Sippel securing the team point with a 7-5 win on court three.
 
John Chin extended the Boise State advantage to 2-0 with a straight-set victory, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5 singles. The lead increased to 3-0 following Arca Costas' 6-3, 6-1 win on court two.
 
After Liberty picked up a win at No. 3 singles, Sippel brought the team victory home on court one.

Notables

  • Arca Costas picked up his 160th combined (singles and doubles) career victory when he won in both singles and doubles; he is now three short of tying for 10th place in Bronco history.
  • Arca Costas' win at No. 2 singles was his 91st career win, tying him for 10th all-time at Boise State.
  • Sippel increased his combined wins total this season to 35, 16 in singles and 19 in doubles.
  • Michael Bott earned his 20th doubles victory of the year.
  • The doubles tandem of Marquardt and Sippel are now 7-2 this spring on court three.
  • Bott and Arca Costas are 10-3 in team duals this spring and 11-4 on the year.

What's Next

The Broncos return home for a five-match homestand this coming week, starting with Idaho State and San Francisco on Thursday, followed by a doubleheader Saturday versus George Fox, and concluding with a contest against Montana on Sunday.
