Boise State Sweeps UNLV 4-0 in MW Opener

LAS VEGAS – Boise State men's tennis opened the Mountain West season with a 4-0 road sweep at UNLV Friday evening in Las Vegas. It was the eighth consecutive victory for the 63rd-ranked Broncos who improved to 15-4 overall and 1-0 in MW play, while UNLV moved to 8-8 and 0-1 in league.
 
James Van Herzeele's three-set victory, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, over the Rebels' Milos Dabic at No. 4 singles clinched the match for Boise State.
 
The Blue and Orange opened the contest by taking the team doubles point 2-1 over UNLV. Simon Arca Costas and Michael Bott rolled to the first doubles win, 6-1, on court one.
 
Then with doubles tied at 1-1, Idriss Haddouch and Caden Moortgat clinched the team point for Boise State with a 6-4 win at the No. 2 position.
 
Arca Costas extended the Boise State advantage to 2-0 with a straight-set, 6-3, 6-2, singles victory on court two.
 
John Chin made it 3-0 Broncos when he took No. 5 singles on a set-two tiebreaker 6-3, 7-6(3) to set up Van Herzeele's match clincher to wrap up the shutout victory for Boise State.

 

Notables

  • Arca Costas recorded a pair of victories to move his career combined (singles and doubles) wins total to 171; he remains at ninth all-time but closes to within seven of tying for eighth.
  • Arca Costas' singles victory gave him 96 in his career moving him into sole possession of eighth all-time at Boise State and one short of tying Clancy Shields for seventh.
  • Arca Costas' singles win came on court two giving him 30 career victories at No. 2 singles moving him into third all-time at the position.
  • Van Herzeele's singles win was his 18th of the season and 30th in his career.
  • Chin's singles victory was his 12th of the year and 20th of his collegiate career.
  • Bott's and Arca Costas' doubles victory was their eighth straight…they are now 16-3 in spring duals and 17-4 overall.
  • Bott increased his team lead for doubles victories to 26.
  • Arca Costas' 24th doubles victory of the year gave him 75 in his career, tied for 12th all-time.
  • Moortgat earned his 17th doubles win of the season and the 39th of his career.

What's Next

The Broncos remain on the road for the opening weekend of conference play as they travel to San Diego to face the Aztecs at 1 p.m. (Mountain) on Sunday.
