Boise State Rallies from Two Down to Win at SDSU

Broncos win their ninth straight match.

SAN DIEGO – Boise State's men's tennis team rallied from a 2-0 deficit Sunday afternoon to defeat the San Diego State Aztecs 4-2 on the road. The Broncos improved to 16-4 overall with the win and 2-0 in Mountain West play.
 
After dropping the doubles point 2-1 and the No. 1 singles match to fall behind 2-0, Boise State rallied with four consecutive singles victories. Simon Arca Costas provided the match-clinching singles victory on court two with a three-set 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Chikaya Sato.
 
Leading up to Arca Costas' decisive match winner, James Van Herzeele started the rally with a straight-set win 6-1, 7-5 on court four.
 
Ryo Minakata tied the contest at 2-2 when he defeated Andre Saleh 7-5, 6-2 at No. 6 singles, followed by John Chin's victory on court five with a set two tiebreaker 6-1, 7-6(4).
 
Earlier in doubles play, the Bronco tandem of Jan Lucca Marquardt and Minakata collected the lone Boise State victory on court three by a 6-4 score.

Notables

  • Arca Costas' singles victory gave him 97 in his career moving him into a tie for seventh-place all-time in program history with former Bronco great Clancy Shields.
  • Arca Costas' singles victory moved his career combined (singles and doubles) wins total to 172; he remains at ninth all-time but closes to within six of tying for eighth.
  • Arca Costas' singles win came on court two giving him 31 career victories at No. 2 singles as he remains third all-time at the position.
  • Arca Costas has won 17 consecutive singles matches and is undefeated at 16-0 in team duals this spring.
  • Van Herzeele's singles win was his 19th of the season and 31st in his career.
  • Chin's singles victory was his 13th of the year and 21st of his collegiate career.
  • Minakata recorded his 14th singles win of the season.
