Broncos Extend Wins Streak to 11, Sweep Air Force and EWU

BOISE, Idaho – The 65th-ranked Broncos rolled to a pair of victories on Saturday in Boise defeating Air Force 4-0, in a Mountain West match, and Eastern Washington 7-0. The victory extended Boise State's wins streak to 11 and it improved to 18-4 overall and 3-0 in Mountain West play.

Boise State opened the day by taking the team doubles point 2-1 over Air Force with wins on court one by Simon Arca Costas and Michael Bott, 6-4, followed by the team point clinching win at the third position by Jan Lucca Marquardt and Ryo Minakata, 6-3.

After James Van Herzeele and Arca Costas cruised to straight-set singles victories on courts four and two, respectively, Minakata clinched the match for the Broncos versus the Falcons with his 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles.

In the second match of the doubleheader versus Eastern Washington, Boise State swept the three doubles matches to claim the team point.

The Broncos then claimed six straight-set victories in singles as they stormed past the Eagles. Caden Moortgat began the roll with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles followed by Minakata on court five 6-1, 6-0.

Marquardt recorded the match clincher with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the sixth position to wrap up the two-match sweep for Boise State.  

Also earning singles wins against EWU, the teams elected to play the contest out were Idriss Haddouch, Arca Costas and Van Herzeele on courts four, one and three, respectively.

Top Broncos

  • Arca Costas went 4-0 on the day winning both No. 1 doubles matches, as well as his two singles contests at No. 2 and then No. 1.
  • Minakata also went 4-0 on the day tallying two doubles and two singles victories, including the match clincher against Air Force.

  • Arca Costas now has a team-high 28 singles victories this year, stretching his unbeaten streak to 19...he also has 26 doubles wins.
  • Arca Costas recorded his 98th and 99th career singles victories Saturday to claim sole possession of seventh place all-time in program history, one short of tying for sixth.
  • Arca Costas' two singles and two doubles victories gave him a combined 176 career wins as he closed to within two of tying for eight all-time at Boise State.
  • Arca Costas moved into a tie for 10th all-time at Boise State for career doubles wins with 77.
  • Michael Bott extended his team-high total for doubles wins this season to 28.
  • Minakata now has 16 singles and 11 doubles victories this year.
  • Moortgat moved his win totals to 15 in singles and 18 in doubles.
  • Van Herzeele reached the 20-win milestone in singles as he improved to 21-11 on the year.

Boise State will conclude a three-match homestand next Friday (April 14) with the Alumni match versus New Mexico at 4 p.m. at the Appleton Tennis Center.
