Broncos Down Aztecs in MW Championship First Round

LAS VEGAS – Boise State men's tennis held off the San Diego State Aztecs 4-2 in the opening round of the Mountain West Men's Tennis Championship in Las Vegas on Wednesday. The win improved the Broncos to 19-7 overall and moves them into Thursday's semifinal round.

Sam Sippel clinched the match for the blue and orange with his three-set, 7-5, 5-7, 6-2, victory at No. 2 singles over San Diego State's Chikaya Sato.

Boise State opened the contest by claiming a dramatic doubles point over the Aztecs winning it on a tiebreaker at the No. 1 pair where Simon Arca Costas and Michael Bott beat Sato and Johannes Seeman 7-6(3). Prior to that Sippel and Jan Lucca Marquardt won on court three 6-2.

Arca Costas gave the Broncos a 2-0 advantage with a straight-set victory at No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-3.

Up 2-1, Boise State's Idriss Haddouch rallied from a set down to win on court six 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 to move the third-seeded Broncos to within one of victory.

SDSU claimed a second singles victory to close the gap to 3-2, setting up Sippel for the match clincher.

Notables
- Bott and Arca Costas won their 21st doubles match of the year to improve to 21-6 overall and 20-5 in team duals this spring.
- Bott claimed his team-best 30th doubles win (30-10) overall to claim sole possession of fifth place in the Broncos record book for doubles wins in a single season…he is the first Bronco since Thomas Schoeck (41) and current Boise State head coach Luke Shields (40) in 2004-05 to record 30 or more wins in a year.
- Arca Costas recorded his 28th doubles win on the year to move into a seven-way tie for 10th place in the record book for doubles wins in a single season.
- Caden Moortgat and James Van Herzeele came up short in a heartbreaking tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles 7-6(6).
- Marquardt and Sippel increased their individual win totals to 24 and 20, respectively…Sippel is the fourth Bronco to hit 20 doubles wins this season.
- Arca Costas won his 31st singles victory of the year and 102nd in his career to move into a tie for fifth in program history for wins in a season and into sole possession of sixth place for career victories.
- Arca Costas' doubles and singles victories gave him a combined career win total of 179 moving him into eighth place all-time in school history.
- Sippel earned his 17th win of the year.
- The win over San Diego State gave Boise State a 12-11 advantage in the series since 1993.
