4/30/2023 4:30:00 PM | Softball
A Boise State single-game record 1,006 watched a battle of the top two teams in the conference. The three-game series between the Broncos (29-14, 14-4 MW) and Aztecs (32-13, 16-6) drew a school-record 2,590.
With the win, Boise State leads San Diego State by percentage points. The Broncos can wrap up the conference regular season title with two wins at Fresno State next week. The Aztecs have concluded their conference slate.
Sunday, Boise State used a five run second inning to chase San Diego State starter Dee Dee Hernandez (7-3) and take control early.
After Eliyah Flores homered in the first, Alycia Flores doubled to drive in Jordyn Hutchins, who led off the second with a walk. Kelsey Hall followed with a single to plate Flores.
After a sacrifice and wild pitch, Hall came home on a single by Abby Bumcrot that ended Hernandez's afternoon. Two batter later, Hanna blasted her ninth home run of the season to give the Broncos a 6-0 advantage. It was also Boise State's 75th of the season to break last year's school record.
The Aztecs scored three times in third and once in the fourth, but the Broncos responded in their half of the fourth. Hanna tripled to open the frame and scored on a single by Eliyah Flores. A walk, a wild pitch and an error allowed Flores to score.
Ashlyn Whalen gave the Broncos some insurance with a solo home run in the fifth before San Diego State scored twice in the top of the sixth to pull within 9-6.
Hanna then made the play of the game defensively when she leaped above the wall to take a home run away from Jillian Celis leading off the seventh.
Taylor Caudill (13-8) gave up three runs, two earned, in 5 2/3 innings and struck out six to pick up the win.
