BOISE, Idaho – Boise State soccer was dealt a 4-1 loss by No. 11 BYU in the home-opening match of the 2023 campaign, Saturday night.

The Cougars (4-0-0) found a goal in the second minute as Ellie Boren netted one from just outside the box.

BYU extended its lead 2-0 in the second half when Olivia Wade-Katoa smashed the ball into the center of the net.

Boise State (1-1-1) cut the deficit 2-1 when a cross by Morgan Stone found the feet of Michaela Justiniani, who put it past the BYU keeper from outside the penalty box. More chances came for the Broncos as the end neared, but a goal in the 72nd minute by Allie Fryer and penalty goal by Brecken Mozingo in the 76th minute for the Cougars handed the Broncos their first loss of the season.

Quotables
  • "I am so proud of the girls for putting themselves out there like that, allowing themselves to grow from playing against such an amazing team that's been in the top 10 for the last 10 to 15 years," said head coach Jim Thomas. "We get to learn from the best, and they'll pull so much from tonight and from watching video that will stay with them for the rest of their careers."
  • "It was great playing under the lights with 1,600 people," said Thomas. "We got to share something with the community the way it's meant to be shared. I'm so proud of Jeramiah (Dickey), Heather (Berry), Nathan (Burk), Bryan (Beals) and all the guys that made this thing happen because we got to give it back to the players and the community."
