Men's Tennis Opens Fall Season at Home with Dar Walters Invite

BOISE, Idaho – Boise State men's tennis opens the fall season this weekend at home when the Broncos host the Dar Walters Invite at the Appleton Tennis Center on campus. Admission is free of charge, as is parking.

This event is the annual mini-dual competition where teams are divided up into groups of two or pairs. Each pair will compete together throughout the competition, playing one doubles match and two singles contests against another pair; the pair that wins two of the three points advances in the bracket.Â

The Schedule
Dar Walters Invite
Boise, Idaho (Appleton Tennis Center)Sept. 15-17
FridayÂ
- Two rounds, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Parking: West Albertsons Stadium parking lot by the arena (use the kiosks and pick the tennis option).Â
SaturdayÂ
- One round, 9 a.m. to 2 or 3 p.m.
- Parking: With football playing at 10 a.m. in the stadium, the best available parking for tennis will be the Brady Parking Garage on the west side of campus (use the kiosks and pick the tennis option).
SundayÂ
- One round, 9 a.m. to 2 or 3 p.m.
- Parking: West Albertsons Stadium parking lot by the arena (use the kiosks and pick the tennis option).Â
The Field
- There will be six schools represented at the Dar Walters Invite this year, including Boise State (two teams), George Fox (4), Idaho (2), Idaho State (4), Utah State (1) and Weber State (2).
Tournament Format
- The pairs will compete in one bracket of 16.

- Boise State's men's tennis team would like to thank Dar Walters for sponsoring this event. Walters is a longtime tennis enthusiast and participant who has won more titles and national championships than any other player in Idaho tennis history (439 titles in 15 states). His honors are numerous and include being a member of the Idaho Sports Hall of Fame and the University of Idaho Sports Hall of Fame.
Representing Boise State
- Boise State will have four student-athletes competing in this week's tournament: senior Teague Burger, sophomore Idriss Haddouch, and freshmen Liam Toroman and Kyvan Rietkerk.
What's Back in 2023-24
- The Broncos returned eight members of the 2023 Mountain West Tournament championship team that went 21-8 overall and advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament last May.
- Back are fifth-year Jan Lucca Marquardt; seniors Burger, Caden Moortgat and Sam Sippel; juniors John Chin, Jett Middleton, and James Van Herzeele; and sophomore Haddouch.
What's New in 2023-24
- Boise State added three newcomers to this year's squad, one transfer and two true freshmen.
- The transfer is Jip van Assendelft from Oklahoma.
- The freshmen are Liam Toroman from Los Angeles and Kyvan Rietkerk from the Netherlands.Â
- The Broncos also added a new associate head coach Daniel Hangstefer, who came to Boise State from the University of Idaho where he was the head coach for the last five years.
The Man in Charge
- Luke Shields returns for his second season at the helm of the Boise State program after guiding the team to the 2023 MW Tournament Championship and to the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Arizona last May.
- He is 21-8 as the Broncos head coach and 114-71 overall.
