Department secured its highest score in program and conference history
BOISE, Idaho - Boise State Athletics surpassed its all-time best NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) according to data released by the NCAA on Wednesday. The Broncos recorded a four-class average GSR of 96 percent which is the top overall score in the Mountain West this year and is the highest score in conference history. Boise State has set or tied its department record in each of the last 16 reports. The latest figures include the cohort that entered college during the 2017-18 academic year.
"Congratulations to our student-athletes who are maximizing their time representing the Blue and Orange in the classroom and on the playing field to achieve academic excellence," said Jeramiah Dickey, Boise State Director of Athletics. "This is a testament to the culture and support system we have built for all of our student-athletes. I also want to thank our Academic Services staff for all of their hard-work and the care they pour into our Bronco student-athletes every single day. Those who commit to Boise State, stay at Boise State and finish, and we are pleased to see the success our Broncos have reached."
The department had six women's sport programs – basketball, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball and volleyball – record perfect GSR scores of 100 percent. Golf has recorded a perfect score in each of the last 19 reports.
On the men's side, cross country/track and field had a perfect score while football's score of 96 percent is the highest in program history and ranks second in the conference. Among Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools, the Broncos ranked in the top 10 with the fourth-best overall score. Basketball also ranked second in the conference with 92 percent.
Programs that set or tied records included the following: women's basketball, men's cross country/track and field, women's cross country/track and field, women's golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball and volleyball.
"We are so proud of this group and their commitment to graduate," said Gabe Rosenvall, Associate Athletic Director/Student-Athlete Academic Services. "They persevered during the COVID disruption and never lost sight of their goals."
Since the first NCAA GSR release in 2002, Boise State Athletics has improved or tied the previous year's score for 22 consecutive years and raised its GSR 26 percentage points in the process.
Each year, the NCAA publicly announces the GSR of all Division I institutions. The graduation-rate data is based on a six-year cohort prescribed by the U.S. Department of Education, the most recent version including freshmen scholarship student-athletes who entered college during the 2017-18 academic year.
The Division I Board of Directors created the GSR in response to Division I college and university presidents who wanted data that more accurately reflected the mobility of college students than the federal graduation rate. The federal rate counts any student who leaves a school as an academic failure, no matter whether he or she enrolls at another school. Also, the federal rate does not recognize students who enter school as transfer students.
The GSR formula removes from the rate student-athletes who leave school while academically eligible and includes student-athletes who transfer to a school after initially enrolling elsewhere. This calculation makes it a more complete and accurate look at student-athlete success.
