
Broncos Crush Blue Demons to Earn Split

ARLINGTON, Texas – Sydney Groves homered twice and drove in eight runs as Boise State defeated DePaul 19-2, Saturday at the Maverick Invitational.

The victory came in five innings via mercy-rule as the Broncos improved to 5-2. Earlier in the day, Boise State lost 8-5 to Michigan State (3-5).

"As I said last week, we are a young team and we are going to have some ups and down," head coach Justin Shults said. "Once again we had a great response though and will need to be focused tomorrow."

The eight RBI by Groves tied the school single-game record. Six of them came during an 11-run third inning.

Against the Blue Demons (0-8), the Broncos scored four times with two outs in the top of the first on two-run home runs by Brooklynn Pettis and Groves, respectively.

Boise State put the game away with an offensive explosion in the third. After Alycia Flores singled in a run, Grove launched a three-run home run to right field. With one out, Megan Lake extended the lead to 12-1 with a grand slam.

The next three batters reached and Groves cleared the bases with a three-run double to make the score 15-1.

Against the Spartans, the Broncos led 5-2 after four innings. Michigan State tied the game in the fifth and won it in the seventh with a pair of three-run home runs.

The Broncos have a rematch with the Spartans, Sunday at 10 a.m. CT/9 a.m. MT and face Kansas City at 3 p.m. CT/2 p.m. MT.
