
Boise State Wins Battle of Broncos

BOISE, Idaho – Sydney Groves homered twice and Taylor Caudill fired a four-hitter in Boise State's 8-0 mercy-rule victory over visiting Santa Clara at the City of Trees Classic.

With the win, Boise State (18-10) extended its winning streak to seven games. Santa Clara (15-10) saw its seven-game winning streak snapped.

Boise State took a 1-0 lead in the second courtesy of a throwing error by Santa Clara. With two outs in the third, Groves hit her third three-run home run in two days and the host Broncos led 4-0.

In the fifth, Mykenzie Hanna walked with one out and Brooklynn Pettis blasted a two-run home run to make the score 6-0. Groves made it back-to-back homers with her Mountain West-leading 11th of the season.

With two outs, Megan Lake singled as a pinch hitter. Ashlyn Whalen reached on an error and Abby Bumcrot singled to plate Lake with the final run.

Caudill (10-6) struck out seven and did not walk a batter to register her seventh complete and first shutout of the year.

"We did a great job of handling our business today," head coach Justin Shults said. "Taylor (Caudill) was very good in the circle and we had some big swings. We continue to get better every day and that is a sign of a good softball team."
