Broncos Finish 3-1 at Sugar Beach Bash

HAMMOND, La. – Boise State beach volleyball wrapped up a successful weekend at the Sugar Beach Bash in Hammond, La., finishing 3-1 at the two-day event. 

The Broncos (14-7, 1-0 Southland) defeated No. 20 Tampa, 4-1, on Friday, marking the third win over a ranked opponent in program history. The victory was also the first ranked win since Boise State defeated No. 13 Cal Poly, 4-1, on March 23, 2022. The Broncos also defeated Southeastern Louisiana and Tulane, while dropping a dual to South Carolina. 

The Blue and Orange opened the two-day event with a 5-0 sweep over Southeastern Louisiana. All five Bronco duos won in straight sets to give Boise State its first conference victory of the season.

Trailing 1-0 against No. 20 Tampa after a loss on court four, Sharli O'Neil and Elli Wolthuis overcame a 14-11 deficit in the third set, winning 21-17, 19-21, 19-17 to tie the dual at one. Boise State followed up with straight-set victories on courts one through three to claim a 4-1 victory over the Spartans.

South Carolina came out on fire in the Broncos' third dual on the weekend, winning all courts but the top one to win 4-1. Boise State responded against Tulane. With the dual tied at 2-2, Marlayna Bullington and Sierra Land won a three-set thriller, 17-21, 21-16, 15-10 to give the Blue and Orange the win.

  • Boise State's victory over No. 20 Tampa was the third-ranked win in program history.
  • The win over No. 20 Tampa was the last win over a ranked team since the Broncos defeated No. 13 Cal Poly on March 23, 2022.
  • Marlayna Bullington and Sierra Land finished a perfect 4-0 from the top court on the weekend.
  • The duo has a 16-5 record on the season from court one, breaking the program record for most wins on the top court in a single season.
  • The Broncos will enter the Southland Conference Midseason Tournament with a 1-0 league record following the win over Southeastern Louisiana.

Boise State will compete at the Southland Conference Midseason Tournament, March 22-24, in New Orleans, La. The three-day event will conclude conference play on the season.
