Broncos Lose in Extra Innings
3/30/2024 4:12:00 PM | Softball
BOISE, Idaho – Boise State battled back from a four-run deficit, but lost 6-4 in eight innings to San Jose State, Saturday.
Â
The Broncos (23-14, 3-3 Mountain West) trailed 4-0 with six outs left before rallying to tie the score.
Â
With one out, Sydney Groves and Brooklynn Pettis walked and Mykenzie Hanna launched a three-run home run to pull the Broncos within 4-3. Hollie Farmer was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a ground out. Karizma Bergesen then came off the bench to drill a single to center on the first pitch she saw against her former team that tied the game 4-4.
Â
The Spartans (12-16, 3-3 MW) scored twice in the top of the eighth thanks to the sun. Farmer misplayed a pop up at shortstop while battling the sun to start the inning and Sophia Knight lost a ball at the last moment that fell for a two-out, two-run double.
Â
"It is a disappointing loss for sure," head coach Justin Shults said. "There were some positives. Jenna Bloom was very good in the circle and overall we came away with a series win."
Â
Bloom started in the circle and logged 3 2/3 innings of one-hit shutout ball. Abby Dowell (5-5), the third Boise State pitcher, was charged with loss after giving up two unearned runs in 2 1/3 innings.
