
Broncos Split Doubleheader with Rebels

BOISE, Idaho – Boise State won the opener of a doubleheader 8-0 in five innings, but UNLV took the nightcap 4-3 in nine innings to earn a split in Mountain West softball, Wednesday.

In the opener, the Broncos (24-15, 4-4 MW) exploded for seven runs in the first inning and cruised to the mercy-rule victory.

Sydney Groves started the scoring with a three-run home run, her conference-leading 15th of the season. Mykenzie Hanna made it back-to-back long balls, belting her 12th of the year for a 4-0 lead.

With two outs, Abby Bumcrot doubled in a run and Sophia Knight followed with a two-run double to cap the rally.

Hollie Farmer added a run-scoring double in the second for an 8-0 lead. That was more than enough for Taylor Caudill (13-8) who retired 15 of the 18 hitters she faced with seven strikeouts for her 11th complete game and third shutout.

Boise State started fast in game two when Groves plated two with a first-inning single. UNLV (22-11, 7-3) put together five-straight hits against Abby Dowell in the third to lead 3-2.

The Broncos tied the game in the fourth on an error by the Rebels and Jenna Bloom kept the score 3-3 into the fifth prior to a 51-minute weather delay.

UNLV finally broke through in the ninth against Caudill, who entered in the fifth, scoring on three hits and a Boise State error to come away with the victory.
