
Broncos Cap Perfect Weekend

OREM, Utah – Boise State defeated Utah Valley 8-2 and Weber State 13-5 in five innings, Saturday in nonconference softball.

The Broncos (15-10) finished the weekend with a 4-0 mark, scoring 51 runs in 23 offensive innings while batting .425 as a team.

"We did a great job dealing with adversity this weekend," head coach Justin Shults said. "It would have been nice to play at home and I am proud of the way our team adjusted to the situation. Thank you to Utah Valley for hosting us on such short notice."

Against the host Wolverines (6-11), Mykenzie Hanna staked the Broncos to a 1-0 lead in the third with her Mountain West-leading eighth home run of the season.

With the score tied 1-1 in the fifth, Alycia Flores drilled a two-run home run to put Boise State in front 3-1. Brooklynn Pettis added a towering two-run blast later in the inning to double the lead.

Boise State added a run in the sixth on an RBI-single by Flores and two in the seventh courtesy of an RBI-ground out by Abby Bumcrot and a run-scoring single by Keely Goushá.

Taylor Caudill (8-6) went the distance with eight strikeouts to earn the win.

Boise State jumped out to a 6-0 lead over Weber State (9-14) before the Wildcats recorded an out. Sophia Knight, Hanna and Flores began in the game with singles for a 1-0 lead. After Sydney Groves walked, Jordyn Hutchins launched a grand slam for a 5-0 advantage. Leah McAnally then hit the first pitch she saw from a reliever for a solo home run.

The Broncos led 6-3 entering the fourth and then scored three times with two out. Hutchins knocked in a run with a single and, two batters later, Hollie Farmer plated two with a single.

After Weber State closed within 9-5, Boise State added four in the top of the fifth. Flores drove in two with a double, Hutchins added a sacrifice fly and McAnally capped the rally with an RBI-single.

The Wildcats threatened to extend the game in the home half of the frame by putting runners on the corners with zero outs. However, reliever Brook Thompson retired the next two hitters and Taylor Caudill came in to record the last out and make a winner out of Jenna Bloom (4-2).
