Broncos Edged by No. 12 Hawai'i in Queen's Cup Championship

HONOLULU — Boise State beach volleyball fell short on Saturday night on Queen's Beach in Honolulu, as the 12th-ranked Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine held off the Broncos 3-2 in the championship match of the Heineken Queen's Cup.

The Broncos started the three-day event with a dual against Saint Mary's. After splitting the first two matches, the Gaels pulled away with a win on court three, but Marlayna Bullington and Sierra Land responded with a 21-16, 25-23 win on the top court to tie the dual at 2-2. Saint Mary's prevailed on court five, winning 21-19, 13-21, 15-11 to take a 3-2 victory.

Boise State faced off against No. 12 Hawaii in the second dual of the tournament, losing all five matches 5-0. The Broncos responded with their second victory of the year over Pepperdine 3-2, winning matches on courts three, four, and five to claim the victory. The Blue and Orange ended pool play with a 5-0 sweep over Chaminade.

Bracket play began on day three of the tournament, with the Broncos going 2-1 on Saturday. Boise State rolled past Chaminade in the quarterfinal match, then avenged an earlier tournament loss to Saint Mary's by beating the Gaels 3-2 in their semifinal contest to advance to the title match.

The Broncos battled the Rainbow Wahine hard during the championship contest and had their chance for the upset, but they could not pull it off. Mya Jackson and Addison Wolden won in three sets, 21-17, 13-21, 15-12, at the No. 4 position, while Emilia Guerra-Acuña and Ava Anderson rallied from a set down to take the threes 18-21, 21-16, 15-13 to make the final score 3-2 Hawai'i.

Notables

Marlayna Bullington and Sierra Land tied the program record for most wins on Court No. 1 with 12 wins on the season, tying Erin Martin and Yasmin Tan in 2022.
Mya Jackson and Addison Wolden went 6-1 as the No. 4 pair during the tournament, including a 3-0 record on Saturday. They split with Hawai'i's fours in two matches at the tournament.
Emilia Guerra-Acuña and Ava Anderson finished 4-3 at No. 3 in the tournament, including a split with the Hawai'i No. 3 pair.
The No. 1 tandem of Marlayna Bullington and Sierra Land, as well as the No. 5 pair of Elli Wolthuis and Sharli O'Neil also finished the three days of competition with 4-3 records.
Boise State finished the Heineken Queen's Cup at 4-3 to improve to 11-6 overall.
