BOISE, Idaho – Boise State beach volleyball added to the longest winning streak in program history with victories over Saint Mary's and No. 17 Arizona, Wednesday, at the Boise State Beach Volleyball Complex.
The Broncos (26-8) opened the tri-dual with a 3-2 victory over the Gaels (12-14). After dropping the first two sets against the Wildcats (17-8), the Blue and Orange won three consecutive matches to pull off the reverse sweep. The win over Arizona was the 10th-consecutive win for Boise State and marked the second win over a ranked opponent on the season.
Addison Wolden and Abbie Wolf scored the first point of the day for Boise State, winning in three sets on court four to give the team a 1-0 lead over Saint Mary's. After the Gaels evened the score with a three-set victory on court two, the Broncos picked up wins on court one and three to clinch the dual. Saint Mary's won the final match on court five as Boise State won 3-2.
The Wildcats claimed the first two points of the afternoon finale with straight-set victories on court four and two. Marlayna Bullington and Sierra Land started the rally, pulling off a straight-set victory on the top court to put Boise State on the board. Moments later, Sharli O'Neil and Elli Wolthuis pulled off a comeback win on court five to even the score at two.
After dropping the first set, Wolden and Wolf sent the match to a climactic finish with a 23-21 second-set win. The pair raced out to a five-point lead midway through the third set, but the Wildcats stormed back to take a 14-11 lead. Fighting against three consecutive match points, the duo remained calm, ripping off four-straight points to eventually claim the dual for the Broncos with a 17-15 victory.
"We were able to be composed in situations when the pressure was on us. We've lost a lot of matches this year where we were in a similar situation. We didn't let the pressure affect our game. We've gotten so much better at that this season and we just have to keep adding to that moving forward." - Voigt
"We want to be peaking at the right time and that's at our conference tournament next weekend. We want to keep adding to our game. For our program, getting a quality win against a good program is huge. This is our first win against them. We've had some amazing battles with them so the fact that we can finally flip that switch and get that win shows that we can play at the level. That confidence is huge moving forward." - Voigt
