Broncos Finish Third at Alki Beach Invitational

SEATTLE – Boise State beach volleyball wrapped up its regular season with a third-place finish at the Alki Beach Invitational, Saturday.
 
The Broncos (28-11) finished 1-2 in pool play on Friday to earn a third seed in bracket play. Boise State fell to No. 15 Georgia State in the first round before defeating Oregon to finish third. 

The Blue and Orange opened pool play on Friday against Georgia State. The Panthers (18-11) picked up the first point with a straight-set victory on court two, but Addison Wolden and Abbie Wolf tied the dual with a win from the No. 3 slot. Sharli O'Neil and Elli Wolthuis gave the Broncos the lead with another win on court five, but the Panthers clinched the dual with victories from the No. 1 and 4 positions.

Boise State fell to No. 11 Washington 5-0 in the second dual of pool play. In the final contest of the day against the Ducks (4-23), the Broncos started out with two straight-set wins on courts two and five, setting up Marlayna Bullington and Sierra Land to clinch the dual with a three-set win on the top court. Boise State completed the sweep with victories on courts three and four.
 
The Broncos opened bracket play on Saturday with a rematch against Georgia State. The Panthers put the first point on the board with a victory on court two, but Rorianna Chartier and Lily Patock won in straight sets on court four to even the score. Georgia State took another lead with a win at the No. 3 position, but Bullington and Land won in two sets to force the dual's decision to court five. The Panthers won 18-21, 21-19, 15-12 to clinch the dual.

Wolden and Wolf opened the third-place dual against Oregon with a quick victory on court three. Bullington and Land made it 2-0 with a straight-set win from the top court, allowing Chartier and Patock to clinch the match with a victory from the No. 4 position, setting up a 4-1 win for the squad.

Notables

  • Marlayna Bullington and Sierra Land broke the program record for most wins by a pair in program history with 28 victories. 
  • By winning their first match of the tournament, Addison Wolden and Abbie Wolf notched 14-straight victories, tying Madison Nichols for the longest win streak in program history.
  • Wolden is the first Bronco in program history to notch 30 individual wins in a season.
  • Lily Patock and Wolden moved into the top ten in program history for career wins. Patock sits at ninth place with 31 career victories while Wolden is tied for 10th with 30.
  • Boise State maintains an undefeated record against Oregon all-time, winning all 17 contests.

What's Next

Boise State will compete at the Southland Conference Championship, April 19-21, in Houston, Texas. The Broncos will be the No. 2 seed and will take on No. 7 McNeese State in the first round at 10:15 a.m. MT. on Friday.
