BOISE, Idaho – Following her participation in the Olympics, former Bronco runner Marisa Howard will be joining the Boise State track & field and cross country staff as an assistant coach, head coach Pat McCurry announced, Wednesday. Howard ran for the Blue & Orange between 2010-15 competing in long distance events.
Â
"I am stoked to be joining coach Pat and the incredible staff that he has assembled at Boise State," said Howard. "I'm excited to invest in this next generation of Broncos and see what we can build. I loved being a Bronco and can't wait to show these athletes what a great place Boise is to train!"
Â
"Obviously we are thrilled to add an Olympian to our staff, but it was Marisa's character that was at the root of the easy decision to add her," said McCurry. "I'm particularly excited about the mentorship she will provide our women's distance athletes, offering them a daily example of how to maintain health and balance while competing at the highest level."
Â
Howard has competed professionally since graduating from Boise State in 2015 and currently runs for Idaho Afoot, a team of athletes trained by McCurry. She most recently earned a spot on the U.S. Olympic Track & Field 3000-meter steeplechase team by running a qualifying time of 9:07.14, the eighth-fastest time in the world. Howard has also competed in two Pan American Games, winning a silver medal in 2019. She has made all five U.S. championship steeplechase finals that she has competed in since graduation.
Â
On the coaching front, Marisa has helped mentor distance runners for seven seasons with her husband Jeff at Rocky Mountain High School in Meridian, Idaho. Since 2017, Rocky Mountain has captured four boys cross country and seven track and field state championships.
Â
During her time with the Broncos, Howard was a three-time Mountain West champion and four-time all-conference runner, a two-time All-American, and the 2014 NCAA runner up in the 3000m steeplechase. Howard holds the fifth-fastest 5000-meter and second-fastest 3000m steeplechase times in Boise State's history.
Â
Howard ran for the Pasco High School cross country and track teams from 2006-10 where she was a five-time Columbia Basin League first team honoree, set three school records as well as two area records, and won two district championships. She is a native of Pasco, Washington, and has spent her last 14 years living in Idaho.
Â
Bronco fans are invited to Dona Larsen Park this Saturday, July 27, at 6:30 p.m. to celebrate and help send Howard off to the Paris Olympics. Attendees will have the chance to get autographs and take pictures with the Olympian.
