BOISE, Idaho – Boise State beach volleyball has added Alex Luna to its staff as an assistant coach, head coach Allison Voigt announced, Tuesday.
Luna joins the Broncos after serving as the assistant coach at South Carolina last season. Previously, he founded the beach volleyball program at Stephen F. Austin and served as the head coach for five seasons from 2019-23.
Â
"We're so excited to have Alex be a part of our program," Voigt said. "He has a lot of experience that will help our team get to that next level. His expertise and passion for the sport are going to not only make the team better but the coaching staff better as well."
As an assistant coach at South Carolina, Luna developed and led the on-court training and film study. He helped lead the Gamecocks to a 20-16 record and a Coastal Collegiate Sports Association tournament championship appearance, the first in program history. South Carolina earned two individual honors for the first time in program history in 2023 - Skylar Allen was named the CCSA Scholar-Athlete of the Year while Julia Waugh garnered the CCSA Freshman of the Year award.
Â
In Luna's five seasons with the Lumberjacks, he totaled 38 wins while guiding the program through three conference transitions. He has twice been recognized as a 30 Under 30 Award winner from the American Volleyball Coaches Association and has been invited to present at the AVCA National Convention.
Â
Along with the success on the sand, his program achieved the highest departmental GPA and earned several national academic awards. Aside from coaching and recruiting, he spearheaded plans for a four-court facility, designed and managed a new budget, oversaw travel logistics, fundraised over $25,000 a year for the program and mentored several graduate assistant coaches that went on to full-time roles.
Â
"I've been watching Allison and Alex do great things at Boise State for years now," Luna said. "They've steadily built a program that's now inches away from being a perennial top 20 team and more importantly they've done it while retaining athletes and developing well-rounded human beings along the way. The opportunity to join a staff with such humility and an eagerness to continue learning and growing was a no-brainer for me."
Prior to his time at Stephen F. Austin, he worked for three seasons as an assistant coach for both the beach and indoor programs at San Jose State. He also has experience working with the USA Beach National Team Development Program as a boys and girls development coach and National Team Scout, as well as at the pro level with the Association of Volleyball Professionals.
Â
An active player, he regularly competes on all surfaces and currently plays outdoor on the AVP Grass Tour and AVP Beach qualifiers. He also plays in the Volleyball League of America, a semi-professional indoor league where he plays as a libero and a setter.
Â
He graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas where he earned degrees in psychology and marketing. He competed in both volleyball and baseball, while also serving as an assistant coach for the women's volleyball team.
