Second Half Domination Lifts Broncos Past Rebels

BOISE, Idaho – Boise State utilized a dominant second half to trounce UNLV 56-31 Saturday afternoon at Albertsons Stadium.
Leading 28-24 at the break, the Broncos (5-2, 3-0 Mountain West) scored four consecutive touchdowns to hand the Rebels (6-1, 2-1 MW) their first loss of the season.Â
The win marked Boise State's 16th consecutive win on The Blue and 15th-straight victory over a league foe. The Broncos also extended their winning streak with UNLV to 10 consecutive victories and their 56 points are the most the team has ever scored against the Rebels.
Boise State generated 562 yards of total offense (294 rushing, 264 passing) in the win. Running back Dylan Riley was the standout offensively, generating 201 rushing yards on 15 touches and finding the end zone for a touchdown. His 13.4 yards per carry are the fourth-highest total generated by a Bronco running back in program history. His fellow backfield mate Sire Gaines also had a stellar performancing, finishing the game with a pair of touchdowns.Â
Quarterback Maddux Madsen matched his career-high with four passing touchdowns and completed 14 of his 23 passes for 253 yards. The redshirt junior has now passed for over 200 yards in eight consecutive contests, a feat that hasn't been accomplished by a Bronco since Brett Rypien.
Boise State also generated points defensively when A'Marion McCoy returned an interception 60 yards to the house in the third quarter. The Bronco defense finished with three sacks and seven tackles for loss in the victory.
Gaines put the Broncos on the board first with a 2-yard rushing score on the team's first offensive possession. After the Rebels responded with a field goal, Cameron Bates found the end zone off a 35-yard rushing touchdown to give Boise State a 14-3 lead after the first 15 minutes of action.
After UNLV responded with its first touchdown of the game, Riley answered with a 65-yard rush, setting up a 7-yard touchdown pass from Madsen to Latrell Caples. The Rebels responded with another touchdown to make it a one-possession game, but Riley answered again with a 49-yard touchdown rush to put the Broncos up 28-17. UNLV scored its third touchdown of the quarter with 43 seconds remaining in the half to cut the halftime deficit to four.
Boise State came out of the locker room on a mission, with Madsen finding Gaines on a screen pass for a 20-yard touchdown. Madsen struck again on the ensuing possession, this time finding Chris Marshall for a 32-yard touchdown pass to give Boise State a 42-24 advantage. McCoy's interception return for a touchdown added to the onslaught, giving the Blue and Orange a 49-24 edge entering the final frame.
Boise State found the end zone yet again following Madsen's 21-yard touchdown pass to Malik Sherrod with a little over five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The Rebels made the final addition to the scoreboard with a touchdown of their own with 2:45 left in the contest.
