SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Brook Thompson went 6 2/3 innings and Boise State shut out Saint Mary's 5-0 in the softball season opener for both schools, Friday.
Â
A senior from nearby Rocklin, Thompson made her first start since 2023 and came within an out of her second-career complete game.
Â
Thompson struck out five, including Alex Cutonilli looking with runners and second and third in the first inning.
Â
"That was the biggest moment of the game," head coach Justin Shults said. "If we give up a hit and go down 2-0, we are chasing the game."
Â
Sophia Knight, who had six outfield assists during her 2024 Freshman All-America campaign, cut down a runner at the plate in the second to keep the game 0-0 against the reigning West Coast Conference champion.
Â
The Broncos got their bats going in the top of the third when Skylar Stroh drilled a one-out double, advanced to third on a single by Knight, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hollie Farmer.
Â
In the fourth, Mykenzie Hanna blasted a two-run home run to center to extend the lead to 3-0. It was the 34th of her career, tying her for fourth all-time at Boise State.
Â
Farmer capped the scoring with a two-run double in the fifth.
Â
"It was great to see all the work we all put in during the fall pay off," Thompson said. "To have three returners have big games on offense and defense was important because it helps set the standard for the season."
Â
The Broncos play Utah Valley at 9:30 a.m. PT/10:30 a.m. MT and NorCal Kickoff co-host Sacramento State at 2:30 p.m. PT/3:30 p.m. MT, Saturday.
