
Bronco Comeback Comes Up Short Against Spartans

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Boise State women's tennis team fell to San Jose State 4-2 in its first road conference match of the season, Sunday afternoon in San Jose, California.

The Spartans (11-1, 2-0) claimed the doubles point after winning matches on courts one and two, 6-3 and 6-4, respectively. At the No. 3 position, Boise State's Bhakti Shah and Paula Schaefer held a 5-4 lead before their match was cut short.

San Jose State claimed the first two singles wins with straight sets victories at the No. 6 and No. 4 spots. Zdena Safarova put the Broncos (10-3, 1-1) on the board with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 over No. 111 Cheuk Ying Shek. Freshman Masa Viriant grabbed another point for Boise State, winning 6-4, 7-5 against San Jose State's Emma Fantousis.
Trailing 3-2, Paula Schaefer fell to Carla Urchoeguia, 6-3, 7-6(3), ending the match and thwarting Boise State's hopes for a comeback. Maya Dutta led her match 6-4, 6-5 when the contest was decided.

- "It was a tough battle on every court today," said head coach Beck Roghaar. "We did a lot of things well and so did San Jose State, but credit to them for coming out with the win. We have a couple of small tweaks to make and I believe in our group so much. We will be ready for next weekend."
- The Broncos will remain on the road, traveling to Las Vegas to face UNLV on Friday, March 21, and San Diego to compete against San Diego State Sunday, March 23.
