Makenzie Butt Named Mountain West Softball Freshman of the Year

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Boise State first baseman Makenzie Butt was named the Mountain West Softball Freshman of the Year, Tuesday.
 
It is the second-straight year the Broncos have earned the award (Sophia Knight) and fifth time overall.
 
Butt is batting .365 with 22 home runs and 76 RBI. Her home run total is a Boise State record and ties the Mountain West freshman record. She is the seventh freshman in NCAA history with 20+ home runs and 75+ RBI and leads freshmen nationally in both categories this season.
 
Butt and Knight were each named All-Mountain West First Team. Knight became the first Division 1 player in 23 years to reach 100 hits in the regular season while setting school and conference records.
 
Knight's 100 hits lead the nation and her .498 batting average ranks third nationally. She set school records for multi-hit games (34), hitting streak (32), on-base streak (44) and consecutive games with a run (24). The sophomore center fielder was named first team for the second-straight year.
 
Senior right fielder Mykenzie Hanna and sophomore catcher Leah McAnally garnered second-team honors.
 
Hanna is batting .344 with 18 home runs and 52 RBI. Her 67 runs are a Boise State record, third in Mountain West history and fourth in the NCAA this season. A native of Chino Hills, California, Hanna set school season and career records for outfield assists with nine and 17, respectively.
 
McAnally batted .397 with four home runs, 23 RBI and a team-leading five doubles in Mountain West games. Behind the plate, she threw out 30% of base stealers in conference action.
 
Seniors Megan Lake and Brooklynn Pettis each received honorable mention.
 
Lake moved into the starting role in left field after three years as a reserve. She is batting .362 with seven home runs and 41 RBI. She tied for the team lead with 10 doubles.
 
Pettis is second on the team with a .376 batting average and has 14 home runs and 45 RBI while splitting time at catcher and designated player.
 
Boise State and Utah State will meet Wednesday, at 3 p.m. PT/4 p.m. MT in the first game of the Mountain West Softball Championship in San Diego, California.
